About Us

Our Story

South Jersey Lion Dance Troupe brings the energy and excitement of traditional lion dance to South Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia area. From grand openings to cultural festivals, our performances spread joy, prosperity, and good fortune. We’re also dedicated to cultural education—sharing the history and meaning of lion dance with schools and communities to celebrate and preserve this vibrant tradition.

Founded in 1996 and proudly revived in 2024 under the leadership of Coach Joe and Coach Linh, South Jersey Lion Dance Troupe continues a legacy of cultural excellence and community engagement. What began as a local passion project has evolved into a cornerstone of cultural celebration in the region, carrying forward the energy, artistry, and values of lion dance for future generations.

Leadership

Meet the Coaches

Coach Linh

Coach Linh has been passionate about lion dance since childhood, beginning her journey performing at her local Vietnamese church. Trained under Sifu Cheung of Cheung Hung Gar in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, she has over 15 years of experience teaching students of all ages the art and discipline of lion dance. Today, she proudly leads the South Jersey Lion Dance Troupe with her two young sons by her side, inspiring the next generation of performers.

Coach Joe

Coach Joe began training in lion dance as a teenager under the original South Jersey Lion Dance Troupe founded by his father, Michael Young. With decades of experience and a background in Shaolin Kung Fu, he brings a powerful and dynamic style to every performance. Today, he continues his family’s legacy by mentoring new dancers and sharing the energy and beauty of this traditional art with the community.
